We were in Sri Lanka for 10 days total and spent the last five with them. Best decision of the whole holiday.Picked us up from our little guesthouse in Aluthgama at 7:30 sharp. The van was clean, AC worked, and there were cold water bottles in the door pockets—small thing but it mattered after a sweaty night. Just the two of us plus another couple, so no sardine-can vibes. Kasun speaks great English and cracks terrible dad jokes, which kept the mood light.Day one was Ravana Falls. The hike down is short but slippery; he handed us each a bamboo stick and went slow so my partner (who’s not the fittest) never felt rushed. At the bottom we swam in the pool while he kept an eye on our bags. Lunch was at a roadside place he knows—string hoppers, pol sambol, and seeni sambol that actually had a kick. Better than half the “tourist” spots in Bentota.The train to Ella was the highlight everyone says it is. Kasun had the tickets ready (2nd class reserved, window side) and met us at Nanu Oya with a sign that just said “Machan” in marker. On the ride he passed around a bag of kadala and played some old-school baila on his phone. Felt like we were locals for three hours.Nine Arch Bridge at 4 pm—perfect light, train came right on cue. He walked us 10 minutes off the main path to a spot with zero crowds. Picnic was king coconut and a slab of love cake he bought from a lady on the platform. Simple, perfect.When the rain hit on day three he didn’t panic—just swapped Little Adam’s Peak for a tea factory tour. We got to pick leaves with the aunties (they laughed at my technique) and drank about six cups of fresh orange pekoe. Still made it to Lipton’s Seat for sunset because the clouds cleared at the last second. Kasun just grinned and said “Sri Lanka weather, machan—wait five minutes.”Yala safari the next morning: leopard in a tree at 6:45 am. Driver spotted it first, Kasun whispered “don’t move” and we sat dead quiet for 20 minutes while it yawned and climbed down. Worth every early alarm.Food was always local, never felt pushed into fancy places. One night we asked for kottu and he took us to a shack in Ella town—best kottu I’ve had, hands down. He even checked if we wanted it less spicy (we didn’t).All-in: transport, train, entries, jeep, most meals, and the eco-lodge near Yala with the open-air shower. No hidden fees, no “optional” extras.Kasun texts back within minutes if you message him on WhatsApp (+94 77 853 4024). Tell him the guy with the bad Sinhala pronunciation sent you. Seriously, just book it.
